    The CNC Machinist, sets up the necessary tools, machines and programs to fabricate and occasionally modify and repair production parts within tight tolerances. If candidates have the proper experience they will train others to use machine shop equipment and inspects their work for accuracy and quality as directed. The CNC Machinist also provides support for maintaining accurate production documentation, and makes recommended changes to effect improvements in fabrication.

    Responsibilities

    • Reviews work orders and makes accurate transactions of materials to fabricate parts.
    • Sets up the CNC machines with the appropriate tooling and cutting parameter requirements to accomplish the desired result as directed by supervisor. Maintains current work station by following good 6S practices. Responsible for filling out inspection reports including first part, getting buddy check, interval checks and last part check. Also, MUST keep trigger board status current with accurate times at each step.
    • Responsible for maintaining:
    • daily/weekly checks on coolant levels and viscosity. Chip removal from machines as needed. (best when coolant has drained back to sump)
    • Spindle, way, hydraulic fluid levels to keep machines running smooth
    • leaks that could cause slip/fall conditions. MUST be reported and or fixed immediately
    • Tools and tool cribs and kits. Follow lean/Kanban principles to maintain proper levels of expendable tooling. Return gages keep station tools in good working order.
    • Program tooling sheets, Q.C. reports, final program storage procedures.
    • Trains others to use machine shop equipment (with proper experience) as directed by supervisor.
    • Performs first article inspection of parts made by others (buddy check). May also assist co-workers when necessary and notifies supervisor if it will take either party off scheduled task timelines.
    • Provides support to members of the department to follow established methods, improving tooling, speeds and feeds, quality for best chip control/ including documentation. ALL changes to programs MUST be with Programmer/ supervisor approval.
    • Maintains stock racks, area safety and good housekeeping, and coordinates work flow in the machine shop.
    • Understands the quality objectives for the organization and contributes to continual improvement.

    Qualifications

    Minimum knowledge at the level of a machinist in training, with moderate milling, turning and grinding experience is necessary to perform this work successfully. Normally a four year apprenticeship program in Machining would be the minimum training for this job. Also, 3 years of diverse industrial machine shop work would be desired. Some other combination of training, experience and ability may provide an acceptable equivalent to the above.

    • Ability to understand and interpret technical specifications to successfully fabricate/repair parts.
    • Ability to read blueprints
    • Must possess physical stamina to work standing at least 75% of the time.
    • While lifting is normally limited to 5-10 lbs., heavy lifting is required occasionally.
    • Excellent hand/eye coordination is required for machining and measurement tasks.
    • Must be able to work with shifting priorities and move from task to task throughout the day as needed.
    • Must be able to use a variety of measuring tools to ensure meeting quality specifications.
    • Must have the patience and ability to concentrate for extended periods of time.
    • Good verbal and written communication skills are needed for all aspects of this job.
