    A highly experienced leader/scientist providing oversight of analytical testing performed in R&D, and managing lab workflows and safety. Manages the analytical team within R&D and oversees the physical laboratory in New Hampton. Initiates & leads problem solving & test method development. 

    The Analytical Team’s main role is to provide analytical support for new product development efforts of the Balchem R&D organization. In addition to working with the R&D development teams, the Analytical organization supports the:

    • Commercial organization by testing competitive materials
    • Quality Organization by developing new methods and assisting with complaint resolution when tests & equipment above and beyond the standard QC methods are needed. 

    The Analytical Lab Manager will be responsible for prioritizing and executing a portfolio of analytical projects, balancing customer needs and aligning to Balchem strategic initiatives. Communicating with, and managing the expectations of internal and external customers is a key part of the job. 

    Focal points include training of staff in analytical test methods, especially using advanced chromatographic equipment. The lab manager will also oversee space/equipment organization with safety, housekeeping, and efficiency in mind. Will participate in product development projects for both all business units, from concept through commercialization, in a dynamic and cross-functional organization.

    Responsibilities

    • Responsible for safety within the Analytical Team and Laboratory. Sets high standards for safe behaviors, holds people accountable for results. Maintains a clean, safe laboratory and measures success with metrics such as OHSA recordable rates and near miss reporting.
    •  Builds a strong team of scientists and technicians, and constantly challenges the team to grow and develop.   Feedback, formal and informal, and development plans are critical elements for success. Insures that all team members have the training/experience they need to achieve the team’s goals, and that team members have a development plan to help them achieve their career goals.
    •  Manages a portfolio of analytical projects to support R&D with New Product Development and process optimization, to support Quality with new method development and complaint resolution as needed, and to support the Commercial organization with competitive product analysis and development of performance data on Balchem products.   Maintains an active prioritization scheme, communicates with internal/external customers, and manages expectations.
    •  Keeps up to date with emerging analytical methods and technology through literature study, supplier contacts, and technical meetings, and incorporate the methods as appropriate.  Proposes and develops new methods and identifies new instruments or techniques to achieve Balchem’s strategic goals.
    •  Participate in product development projects to provide analytical expertise and technical support that impact overall R&D organization in terms of measurement quality/efficiency/throughput.
    •  Collaborate as required with the Director, Quality, for supporting testing of products in plant processes. Provides support to resolve difficult quality issues as needed.
    •  Prepares research reports on projects, analytical research, or equipment evaluation in a timely manner.
    •  Assists in preparing capital and operating budgets.
    •  Perform any other duties as assigned by the CTO. 

    Qualifications

    Education:

    • Must have an advanced degree in Chemistry, minimum requirement is a Master Degree but a Ph.D. in Chemistry/Analytical Chemistry preferred.      

    Professional Experience:

    • At least 10 year’s professional experience in analytical testing including chemical and physical characterization: gas & liquid chromatography, spectroscopy, DSC, rheology etc. Pharmaceutical experience a plus.
    • Excellent problem solving and interpersonal skills needed to work in a project-team driven organization.
